Dear Bertie, dear friend,
Thank you very much for your kind letter dated 21 April 2008.
They say that a week is a long time in politics, so seeing you leave the political stage after a long and fruitful cooperation which lasted for 21 years during which we sat together on the Councils of ministers of labour, ministers of finance and for the past 11 years in the European Council, I find myself in reflective mood.
Therefore, I want to take this opportunity to thank you again for your great companionship and excellent cooperation during all these years, especially on European issues. Your vision and strong European commitment were crucial factors for unlocking the full potential of the "Celtic Tiger" and you bestowed a lasting legacy on Ireland which you have every right to be proud of.
I sincerely hope that we will stay in touch and pursue our good cooperation and fruitful discussions, especially on European issues.
Yours very sincerely, Jean-Claude Juncker Prime Minister

Message du Premier ministre irlandais sortant Bertie Ahern à Jean-Claude Juncker (21.04.2008)
Dear Jean-Claude,
On 6 May next I will step down as Taoiseach and as leader of my party, after 11 years leading the Irish Government.
I would like to take this opportunity to convey my deep appreciation for the excellent working relationship I enjoyed with you during that time. I look forward to relations between our two countries further developing in the years ahead.
Although a small country, Ireland has always sought to play a full part on the international stage. Whether on multi-lateral relations, international trade, protecting the environment, development aid or humanitarian and peacekeeping activities, we have consistently advocated acting in accordance with the principles of democracy, the rule of law, human rights and dignity. We have also sought to develop enduring bilateral relations with states worldwide, large and small.
The international community bas also been hugely supportive to Ireland, for which I am immensely grateful. The arrival of peace in Northern Ireland, the unprecedented expansion of our economy and the doubling of our labour market owe much to our close ties to so many countries and people around the globe.
I have been proud and privileged to have had an opportunity to contribute to these many endeavours and developments. My career to date, including my eleven years as Taoiseach and leader of my party, has been very fulfilling and, at times, exhilarating.
I look forward to new opportunities in the future and to continuing to making a contribution wherever I can.
Thank you once again most profoundly for your support, your cooperation and your friendship.
Yours sincerely Bertie Ahern, T.D. Taoiseach
